Keloid nightmare ends, Malepe undergoes successful surgery
MANOKE
Petros Malepe, a 43-year-old man from Manoke Village outside Burgersfort, who has been living with a massive keloid growth on his chin for over a decade, has finally received help after the plastic surgery team at Mankweng Hospital, successfully removed the massive keloid growth weighing approximately 3.58 kilograms from his body.
According to the Health Department in Limpopo, Malepe was a long-lost patient of the department, and was brought back into the healthcare system through dedication of the surgical team.
The keloid has caused him significant discomfort, stigma, and isolation, affecting his self-confidence and ability to form meaningful relationships.
Recently, Malepe’s life took a positive turn when Dr Ephraim Kgoete, a general medical practitioner, launched a fundraising campaign to cover the cost of surgery, hospitalisation, radiotherapy, and ongoing emotional support.
The campaign, which aimed to raise R70 000, garnered significant support, with over 26 donors contributing more than R26 000.
The Limpopo Provincial Government, led by Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba, expressed commitment to providing quality healthcare services to Malepe.
However, there was a reported disagreement between the government and Malepe regarding treatment, with the government claiming he refused their assistance.
Fortunately, Malepe’s situation drawn attention from non-profit organisations, including Breaking New Grounds Foundation and Khayalami Health Foundation, which have joined forces to support him.
These organisations also worked together to raise funds and mobilise resources for Malepe’s treatment.
Limpopo Health MEC, Dieketseng Mashego, commended the plastic surgery team for their exceptional work.
She explained that the procedure will not only improve Malepe’s physical appearance, but brings immense relief, lifting what was described as a ‘tremendous weight off his shoulders’.
Mashego added that the department has, through its surgical team, once again displayed its commitment and reaffirming its mission to provide accessible, high-quality healthcare to people in Limpopo province.
“This is a testament to the world-class healthcare services that Limpopo is capable of delivering. I am proud of our capable staff and the outstanding teamwork displayed at Mankweng Hospital,” said Mashego.
