Mahlase is new Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality Mayor
JANE FURSE – Merah Mahlase was on Tuesday, 20 November elected the new mayor of Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality during the institution’s Special Council sitting which resolved to amicably realign and reconfigure is executive committee.
Mahlase’s election follows a declaration of vacancy in the committee which was created as a result of the redeployment of former Mayor, Minah Bahula to Sekhukhune District Municipality as Executive Mayor.
She is no stranger to positions of leadership and responsibilities as she has been deputy head of infrastructure and previously served the local municipality and the community in various portfolios among her other developmental credentials.
Mahlase was PR Councillor from 2011-2016. She became a ward councilor in 2016-2021, the position which led her to head the Economic Development Portfolio Committee during the same administration term.
Meanwhile, Morwamakoti Makanyoge fills the vacancy created in the composition of the executive committee, resulting from the resignation of Bahula.
Accepting her new responsibilities, Mahlase remarked, “the legacy left by my predecessors, especially my political mentor, the current leader of the Sekhukhune District Municipality, Minah Bahula, is huge and has made an impactful change in the lives of our people. Having led the municipality for almost two terms, achieving numerous awards, leading and moving the municipality from grade 3 to grade 4 in terms of the grading system of local governance is historic and indeed commendable.”
She indicated that they are therefore, bound to continue with the work and be the torch bearers of change and improve the quality of the lives of communities.
“We would also like to appreciate the communities, more emphasis on the youth who have gone out in numbers to register to vote in the next elections,” concluded Mahlase.
