JANE FURSE - Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality has launched an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system to intensify municipal traffic management, law enforcement and boost revenue collection through traffic fines.
Thomas Mashabela, Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality Acting Communications Manager, said the high-powered real-time traffic system was launched during the Festive Season Road Safety Awareness Campaign held on 21 December on the Jane Furse main road.
Mashabela informed that Makhuduthamaga is the second municipality in Limpopo province and by far the first in Sekhukhune district to launch and operate the ANPR system, also known as K78 Trailer.
“The ANPR will strengthen the municipality’s traffic authority with effective traffic management solutions. System operators will utilize real-time camera to capture vehicle number plates, colour, type of vehicle to detect any outstanding dues to the municipality such as unpaid tickets. In the previous financial year 2022/2023, the municipality managed to generate R182 550 in traffic fines compared to collection of R38 150 in 2021/2022. With the new traffic system, municipal revenue is expected to rise and the money will be channeled to delivering sustainable services to the people,” indicated Mashabela.
He pointed out that due to the geographical location of Jane Furse town, being the central economic node of the district and its fast economic growth, which results in high volume of traffic, the municipality took a decision to produce this new technological traffic system after successful benchmarking programme with the Polokwane Municipality in 2021.
