Avenues to empower intellectually impaired learners explored
POLOKWANE – In an effort to create an inclusive education and learning environment for all, the Capricorn District and New Horizon Special School, jointly with the Limpopo Office of the Premier, the Polokwane Municipality and other entities, hosted a Career Exhibition for the intellectually impaired at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on September 12.
The purpose of the exhibition was to expose learners living with intellectual disability to opportunities that they can access after primary, secondary and tertiary education regardless of their impairment.
The session further sought to bring about social cohesion between the impaired and those classified as normal communities to alleviate the stigma surrounding people with disabilities.
Kwena Robinson Phooko, New Horizon Special School Principal, said he hopes that the Limpopo province could have a more improved education system and curriculum that accommodates learners of different intellectual needs.
President of the South African National Association for Special Education (SANASE) and Mahlasedi Special School Principal, Mshaphu Shale, said the mandate is simple, “To protect and advocate for the quality of education for learners with disability.”
Old Mutual, Capricorn TVET College, Wholesale & Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA), Department of Employment and Labour were some of those who attended the exhibition.
