Eleven arrested in crackdown on illegal mining and illegal immigration

Eleven suspects, aged between 20 and 54, were arrested for illegal mining of sand and contravention of Immigration Act at Sekhukhune, Mopani, and Vhembe District Municipalities respectively. The suspects were nabbed during the ongoing Operation Vala Umgodi conducted on Friday 25 April 2025.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, said during the operation, four suspects were arrested at Hlogotlou Policing area outside Groblersdal in Sekhukhune District for illegal mining of sand.
“It is reported that members of Operation Vala Umgodi deployed at the area spotted the suspects busy loading sand in the trucks at Lukau Village. They approached the suspects, who did not have permits to mine in the area. All the suspects were arrested. Two white Mercedes Benz trucks, white Toyota Dina truck, four pickaxes, eleven shovels, and five spades were confiscated during the arrest,” explained Ledwaba.
He added that seven more suspects, aged between 20 and 47, were arrested for being illegal immigrants at the Letsitele Poling area, under the Mopani District and Musina Policing area in the Vhembe District.
“The arrested suspects will appear the local magistrate’s court soon. The police investigations are ongoing,” concluded Ledwaba.
