SDA welcomes key resolutions on mining and economic growth

The Sekhukhune Development Agency (SDA) has expressed its sincere appreciation for the resolutions taken by the Economic Transformation Commission during the ANC’s 9th Sekhukhune Regional Congress.
The congress, held on Thursday 24 and Friday 25 April 2025 at Boeketlong Lodge in Mogorwane outside Jane Furse, addressed critical mining issues affecting Sekhukhune residents.
The commission resolved to expedite the issuance of mining permits, with a special focus on artisanal and small-scale mining.
Other key resolutions included accelerating the process of permit applications, relaxing regulations governing sand mining in rural jurisdictions, enhancing monitoring and evaluation of social labour plans and advocating for policy or law reforms that require mining houses to disclose their annual turnover.
The commission also resolved to establish a mining academy or college providing mining empowerment summits, workshops, and exhibitions.
They also agreed on exploring mining beneficiation in the region also urging municipalities to prioritize tourism in their staff establishment plans.
The commission furthered resolve to establish and support agricultural cooperatives for youth, resuscitating agricultural schemes, revitalizing and marketing regional tourism sites, increasing budgets for cooperatives and SMMEs support and strengthening enforcement capacity to ensure compliance with municipal planning instruments.
SDA Representative, Puleng Mmotla, said the agency had received the resolutions with utmost seriousness.
“We view these resolutions not only as recommendations but as a directive requiring immediate action. SDA has developed a comprehensive programme of action designed to respond to the resolutions and demonstrate its commitment to achieving its mandate,” he said.
Mmotla added that the plan outlines a paradigm shift, signalling a new era for the agency as it works toward a re-imagined, industrialized, and diversified Sekhukhune economy driven by the SDA.
“The agency’s approach emphasizes tangible outcomes that assure stakeholders of its unwavering commitment to renewing the SDA to achieve its mandate. The SDA is committed to implementing these resolutions and driving economic growth in Sekhukhune,” Mmotla said.
