Makhuduthamaga welcomes massive road development project
JANE FURSE – Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality leadership has welcomed the South African Road Agency (SANRAL)’s R579 road development project which is to result in the upgrade of the 40km-long stretch from Ga-Moloi T-Junction to Ga-Masemola.
The project, which is to the tune of R649 million, is expected to be completed within 48 months from its date of commencement planned for December 2025.
On Wednesday 5 June, the institution’s leadership sat in a high-level delegation meeting with SANRAL at the council camber in Jane Furse, when the introduction of the appointed team of consultants for the upgrade project was carried out.
Mayor Merah Mahlase has called for harmonious participation and engagement to enable the proper implementation of the project.
Mahlase encouraged all community stakeholders to positively welcome the massive development as it is an opportunity to empower local communities and local Small Micro and Medium Enterprise (SMME) participants to play a meaningful role to be able to grow further in the construction industry.
“Community leaders and members are urged to participate in all engagement meetings that will be facilitated by ward councilors and SANRAL officials,” highlighted Mahlase.
Thomas Mashabela explained that the team of consultants presented the draft project designs to the municipality’s leadership who made submissions and comments that would be taken into consideration upon finalization of the designs.
Mashabela confirmed that the project is estimated to have a value of R649 million and expected to be completed within 48 months time frame, commencing in December 2025.
“Government aims to improve the Integrated Transport Plan (ITP) through the expansion of this key national road. Moreover, the implementation of this project will, in the process, create business opportunities for local SMMEs, local contractors together with construction workers,” alluded Mashabela.
SANRAL’s contract participation goal targets to distribute 30% of the actual contract amount to local SMMes. In addition, 30% youth, 30% women, and 0.5% people living with disabilities will be considered as part of the total targeted labour force.
Mashabela indicated that a Project Liaison Committee will be established, involving various community stakeholders in consultation with the municipality and later, a Project Liaison Officer will be appointed for the duration of construction work.
“Tender processes for the bidding of contractors and subcontractors will soon be advertised by SANRAL in public spaces and through media platforms,” informed Mashabela.
