ATOK
The zama-zamas in Sekhukhune are not only mining illegally, they are also izinyokas. The Vala Umgodi Operation uncovered illegal electricity connections and chromite on August 12 at Atok.
The SAPS conducted a disruptive operation at the Atok mining site in Sekhukhune District.
“During the operation, police discovered an illegal electricity connection linked to illicit mining activities. The illegal connection, which included cables and a meter box, was dismantled after Eskom personnel were called to the scene to disconnect and remove the installation,” said Limpopo SAPS spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
Additionally, piles of chromite ore, which had been stockpiled by illegal miners, were removed by the police. The ore is believed to have been stockpiled for later removal. No arrests were made during the operation, but the police said they will continue to monitor the area for any further suspicious activity.
The SAPS said they remain committed to disrupting illegal mining networks, protecting communities, and safeguarding the environment.
