Pub 2010 torched, looted in alleged love triangle fight
SCHOONOORD
A liquor outlet in Schoonoord, Pub 2010, was torched and alcohol looted by Phase 4 residents during the early hours of July 19 at about 01:30.
In a police statement, Limpopo SAPS said the torching occurred after a female cashier was accosted by an armed suspect as she walked to her rented backroom after closing the store.
“The suspect robbed her of an undisclosed amount of money at gunpoint. The victim’s screams alerted a nearby off-duty police officer, who confronted the armed suspect. A shootout ensued, and the suspect was fatally wounded. He was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, “said the Limpopo SAPS spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
He said following the incident, community members rushed to the scene and recognized the deceased. “They then mobilized and, despite police intervention, torched and looted the business premises where the robbery occurred. The police managed to disperse the crowd, but the building was completely destroyed. A case of arson has been opened, and a manhunt has been launched for the suspects involved,” added Ledwaba
Limpopo SAPS commissioner Lieutenant General Hadebe praised the swift and courageous action of the off-duty police officer. He expressed concern over the destruction, stating: “While we commend the bravery of our member who acted selflessly to protect a life, we strongly condemn the criminal conduct of torching and looting. Such actions undermine the rule of law and will not be tolerated.”

Meanwhile the Phase 4 residents have refuted the SAPS version of the story, alleging that the off-duty cop, is the tavern owner and was allegedly in love with the cashier.
Community members alleged the deceased was not a robber but was allegedly at Pub 2010 to visit her girlfriend. They alleged the cop shot at the deceased after realizing he was in a relationship with the cashier.
Phase 4 residents, threatened to protest at the Sekhukhune SAPS, to demand the arrest of the cop, they alleged he is corrupt. Sekhukhune Times will provide regular updates on this story.
