Post Office building gradually turns into white elephant
LEEUWFONTEIN – Vandalism and theft have begun rearing their ugly head at the Moganyaka Post Office building in Leeuwfontein Township.
The abandoned state of the building follows a decision by The South African Post Office (SAPO) to close down operations at 235 post offices across the country in 2024, resulting in multiple job cuts.
On 10 July 2023, the country’s Communications and Digital Technologies Minister placed the SA Post Office into Business Rescue, as its financial stability had been undermined by unsustainable costs, operational inefficiencies and its failures to modernise.
Post Office specifically faced the declining demand for traditional services due to technological advancements and failure to adapt to the latest developments among other challenges.
R2.4 billion funding from the National Treasury was allocated to Post Office in 2023 to support operations and payment of the dividends due to relevant affected parties.
To fully implement the approved business rescue plan, the Post Office required R3.8 billion in funding from National Treasury, as was stated in the application to the high court to place the office into business rescue.
Around the world, post offices have been forced to review their service and product offering. As the physical postal volumes decline, digital and ecommerce solutions have become the new norm. Parcel delivery has increased through online shopping and the private sector has stepped in to provide efficiency delivery.
SOPA, which has been in existence for about 150 years, cannot purely be a commercial enterprise with its social mandate.
Due to the financial distress state of the SAPO over the years, hundreds of post offices were forced to close since 2020, resulting in thousands of jobs lost.
Following the miasma surrounding the office, its countrywide footprint to render such services as the distribution of social grants at its branches, distribution of medication to the needy and various national postal services remain dire.
Adding to the catastrophic developments, in Leeuwfotein Township outside Marble Hall, criminal elements have seized the opportunity of the semi-abandoned post office building, neighbouring the Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality satellite office, to operationalise their devious activities.
Residents in the area have since called for the turning of the building into a satellite SAPS station to effectively combat the worrisome criminality there.
