Limpopo High Court to sentence Maboko for killing three men
BURGERSFORT
The Limpopo Polokwane High Court will on November 1 sentenced (33). Maboko was found guilty of killing three people in 2022.
The man from Alverton in Burgersfort was found guilty of three counts of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, on October 25.
The accused pleaded not guilty and elected to conduct his own defence, and further chose to remain silent throughout
the trial.
The state-led witnesses testified that Maboko had entered a BMW dealership in Nirvana, Polokwane, on April 6, 2022, under the pretext of purchasing a car. He then brandished a firearm and demanded the keys of a BMW X6M from the sales manager.
During the altercation, Muofhe Luvhimbi (56), an educator of George Mbulaheni Secondary School in Tshikuwi Village, Vhembe District, who had brought his vehicle in for servicing, was shot, once in the head and once in the abdomen, and died on the scene.
The Limpopo NPA’s spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, said Maboko had demanded the car keys and fled the dealership in the BMW.
“The police were immediately alerted and arrested Maboko near Silicon, next to the Peter Mokaba Stadium, after finding him inside the stolen vehicle. Two firearms were also recovered.”
According to Malabi-Dzhangi, Maboko was also convicted of the murder of Putana Lucas Malatji, whom he had shot and killed on April 1, 2022.
“On that morning, Maboko arrived at Malatji’s home in Mabocha Village in Burgersfort at about 06:00, parked his white Volkswagen Polo at the gate, and called for Malatji to come out. Malatji, who had been preparing to go to work, met Maboko at the gate and was shot multiple times. He succumbed to his injuries. At the time of the murder, Malatji had been employed by Maboko for construction work.”
Additionally, Maboko was convicted for the murder of University of Limpopo lecturer Prof Mohamed Saber Tayob, who was shot dead while jogging with others in Munnik Street in Sterkpark, Polokwane, on March 13, 2022.
A witness testified that a man driving a white vehicle alighted from his car and shot Tayob several times before fleeing the scene.
In aggravation of the sentence, the deputy director advocate, Lethabo Mashiane, said the families of the three deceased are distraught and unable to cope as they are still traumatised.
They now live in fear as the motive behind the murders remains unknown. They further indicated that the
deceased persons were breadwinners and now the family members are financially unstable.
Furthermore, the State submitted to the court that all communities are tired of senseless killings of their members and the court can see the impact of the crimes the accused had committed through the testimony of the witnesses.
The advocate said the accused was not remorseful of his actions and he gave the court the impression that given a chance, he would commit the same offences. The State concluded by submitting that the court should consider the interest of the community.
Maboko remains in custody.
