Sekhukhune Sports Confederation elects new executive committee

Mogorwane – On Sunday 25 August 2024, sport administrators, athletes and other stakeholders in Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM), gathered at Lapa Lodge in Mogorwane Village, Makguduthamaga Local Municipality (MLM), to elect a new executive committee of Sekhukhune Sports Confederation (SSC).

The new regional sporting leadership was elected during the confederation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) that seen as a pivotal moment to revive sport in the district, which has faced a prolonged period of dysfunctional and stagnation.

The confederation elected Mr Skhumbuzo Gumede as President, Mr Mandla Matsomane as 1st Vice President, Mr Katlego Mthombeni was elected as 2nd Vice President, Ms Florance Maroga was elected Secretary-General, Ms Esther Ngwanaphala was elected Deputy Secretary-General and Ms Dimakatso Tjiane as Treasurer.

Both Mr Patrick Senamela and Mr Stanley Nkadimeng were elected as additional members during the confederation.

The newly elected President, Skhumbuzo Gumede, emphasized the importance of unity and excellence as the confederation moves forward.

“We are not just striving for improvement, we are committed to driving excellence in every aspect of sport within Sekhukhune,” said Gumede.

Meeting facilitator, Lebogang Matlou, who is the Deputy Secretary of Limpopo Sports Confederation and the electoral officer of the day, praised SSC for its success in strengthening the internal democracy of the confederation.

“This AGM was a critical step towards revitalizing the confederation’s functionality and fostering a united approach to sport development in Sekhukhune. We witnessed a genuine intent to move beyond the legacy of dysfunctionality, paralysis, and toxic relations,” she said.

Matlou also announced the members of the newly elected Executive Committee, which includes representatives from across the Sekhukhune District’s local municipalities.

During the AGM, the new executive committee was given a 90-day mandate to plan to ensure all district federations fully comply with membership requirements and are in good standing with the SSC.

Additionally, the leadership team is tasked with circulating and workshopping the Draft Constitution, inviting inputs from members, and encouraging all sports organizers in Sekhukhune to affiliate with the Confederation by 2 November 2024.

President Gumede urged all stakeholders to unite in the effort to grow sports in the district. “Our mission is to reach out to anyone involved in sport and bring them into our fold. We are committed to growing diversity, inclusivity, and representation in our sports federations to match and even exceed the standards of our national body, SASCOC. In the spirit of leaving no one behind, we call on everyone to organize, mobilize, and strategize together for the betterment of sport in Sekhukhune,” he said.
