Light of God host sporting event to fight against crime and substance abuse

Dennilton – Light of God Private School at OR Tambo in Dennilton, Moutse, organizes their third Sports Against Crime and Gender Based Violence (GBV) Awareness at the OR Tambo Stadium on Saturday 1 June.

The sporting event, which was attended by over 400 people, was organized under the theme: “Fighting Against GBV, Crime, Child and Substance Abuse Through Sports”.

Activities taken place during the day were 3km fun walk, official opening ceremony, fun games, Boot-camp, soccer and netball clinics, chess and presentations by young people.

The winners in each sporting code and games walked away with various prizes including medals and certificates.

Sporting event organiser, Mahlatse Aphane, said the purpose of the initiative was to raise awareness against crime and tackle issues of GBV, which the Light of God School believes are escalating in the area.

“We also hosted the football and netball clinics to equip skills on young people and give away soccer and netball balls to each participating teams,” she said.

Mahlatse said the initiative is aiming to join the community together so that together with the private school, they can uplift each other and bring development.

“We organized the event to engage as many young people as possible from OR Tambo to participate in the different sporting codes of their choice, to fight crime and GBV and the scourge of substance abuse. We have noted with concern that most young people, especially from the ages of 16 to 18, are prone to fall to this temptations of trying to do things that are against the law,” she said.

Aphane said the initiative will be continuing annually and aiming to benefit as many young people as possible.

“We urge parents to allow their children to attend the initiative. This is the other way to entertain them instead of allowing our youth to roam the streets and engage in immoral behavior,” she said.

The sporting event was supported by Department of Social Development in Sempupuru, Groblersdal Toyota, Bross Fitness, Tshipi-Noto Funerals, Game-On, Old Mutual and other local businesses.
