BRIDGING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE

Being connected is no longer a “nice-to-have” but more of a necessity as we transition to a digital world. Yet, sadly, so many people in rural and underserved communities remain separated because they cannot afford access to internet connectivity.

Work and education are increasingly more dependent on internet connections, and we can argue that our social interactions largely happen online too.

It is for this reason that community-owned Marula Community Chrome (MCC) approved a project called “Agang Setshaba”, which aims to provide access to affordable, high-quality data to the six communities surrounding Makgomo Chrome.

MCC holds a 50% share in Makgomo Chrome and is mandated to identify and implement developmental projects within the six communities with the proceeds it receives from the chrome processing project. Its directors are appointed by the six community trusts and hold responsibility for collectively considering and deciding on the community development requests placed before them.

This social initiative was approved as part of a broader sustainable development plan for the local communities. MCC is implementing “Agang Setshaba” together with a trusted internet service provider to deploy the wi-fi hotspot solution at places where people gather.

Phase 1 sees the hot spots located in six schools to provide free internet services to assist learners with education and studying:

  • Dihlabakela High School
  • Diketepe Primary School
  • Mafete Primary School
  • Majoe a Kgoro Primary School
  • Mohlalamorudi High School
  • Tswako Primary School

Phase 2 will see a much broader roll out to 19 schools in total as well as hospitals and clinics. They are also currently located in small businesses next to or near to the R37 main road to facilitate broader access.

All sites have been identified after extensive consultation with community leaders and Traditional Councils within the catchment areas.

Additionally, community members were trained to install the customer premise equipment (CPE) within the communities and will be paid for each installation, thereby creating jobs for people within our communities.

MCC and Makgomo Chrome remain committed to providing meaningful development opportunities within the Four Farms, in partnership with the six communities, and to providing real employment opportunities wherever possible to ensure sustainable and lasting impact.
