2024 Road Safety Debate Competition reaches Sekhukhune
MOGORWANE – The Department of Transport and Community Safety wing in Sekhukhune district, in conjunction with the department’s officials from head office hosted the district level 2024 Road Safety Debate Competition at Boiketlong Lodge in Mogorwane Village within Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality recently.
According to the department, the debate competition is a national initiative aimed at encouraging learners to be cognisant of road safety issues and empower them with practical research skills.
It starts at school level in all the provincial education districts across the country, through to provincial level, as a selection process to determine the best contestants to partake in the National Debate Competition, which usually happens annually in September.
The department indicated that the winners who will be representing Sekhukhune district at the provincial level of the competition are scampering eagerly for their next challenge.
“All participants and educators, including veteran Road Safety Officer, Mr. Cyprian Ngobeni were issued with gifts for their contribution. The winners of the challenge were awarded with scholar gift items,” highlighted the department.
The Road Safety Debate Competition is aligned to the South African schools Debating Board prescripts, in which learners debate on contemporary road safety topics. One team proposes the motion and the other opposes. Their arguments on both sides should reveal the magnitude of research done on the topics.
It is aimed at secondary school learners, that is, secondary school and combined secondary school learners as well as Further Education and Training (FET) learners.
The competition starts at school level. Each school prepares a team of five learners who will contest at circuit level.
Schools within a circuit challenge one another and come up with a best team to compete at district level.
Then, the district teams contest to come up with a squad to represent at provincial level. The best five speakers from each province challenge their counterparts at the national stage, representing their provinces.
