Minister Mchunu inspects the Loskop Bulk Water Supply Project

The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, accompanied by his deputies, David Mahlobo and Dikeledi Magadzi, have on Friday 3 March, officially launched the National Water Month in Loskop by conducting inspection at the Loskop Bulk Water Supply Project in Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM), Limpopo Province and Nkangala District Municipality (NDM), Mpumalanga Province.
The Loskop Bulk Water Supply Project is a cross-boundary project that will benefit communities in both Thembisile Hani Local Municipality in NDM and Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality in SDM.
The water scheme project entails three work packages of laying pipelines from Loskop Dam to a Water Treatment Works in Verena. These project packages are implemented simultaneously to accelerate the project.
Annually, the Department of Water and Sanitation celebrates the National Water Month from 1 to 31 March, which is an expansion from the United Nations (UN)’s annual World Water Day on 22 March.
This year’s National Water Month is observed under the theme, “Accelerating change”, as declared by the UN, and calls on governments of the world, the water sector and society at large to work together to accelerate change to solve water challenges.
The Minister together with his entourage and the provincial leaders from both Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces, inspected progress made at the water scheme in Verena.
Following the site inspection visits, the minister engaged with different stakeholders and community members in Verena providing feedback on the progress made on the water supply project thus far.
Mchunu later proceeded to assess the Moutse Drought Relief Project in Dennilton, where he also engaged with residents regarding the progress made in the Loskop Bulk Water Supply Project and provided clarity on other delayed water projects in the area.
The minister instructed ward councillors in the benefiting villages to work closely with the communities in terms of employment opportunities to accelerate the completion of the project.
He assured that the project will be closely monitored by the ministry to ensure that it does not get infiltrated by corruption that will end up leaving benefiting communities without drinking water.
