Illegal dumping increasingly becomes an eyesore
MONSTERLUS – Concerns are mounting among responsible members of the community on the rampant illegal dumping outside a designated dumping site in Monsterlus outside Groblersdal within the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality.
The terrible sight of baby diapers and other form of waste material presents itself just metres away from the areas’ main road.
Domestic animals such as cattle are feasting on the diapers and waste illegally dumped there instead of at the designated site to do so.
The animals’ health stand posed to a serious risk due to unruly elements in the community who dump waste just about anywhere.
However, some community members are putting the blame on Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality accusing the local municipality of failing to manage the dumping facility there.
Members of the community claim it is the fault of the local municipality and incompetence which resulted in the sorry state of affairs.
They further claim that the dumping site in Groblersdal was properly managed and taken care of more than the one in Monsterlus.
Seun Mogotji, a community leader, advised that proper management, rehabilitation and recycling of waste material would go a long way in saving the environment and indeed the planet.
The paper has previously covered stories about people’s irresponsible act of dumping illegally, harming the environment and putting their lives and those of animals at risk.
Several environmental campaigns have been held in various parts of the district to caution people against illegal dumping and create awareness on its dangers.
However, the practice is increasingly becoming a nightmare, rearing its ugly head in many communities across the district.
Attempts to get comment from Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality regarding the Monsterlus situation were not successful at the time of going to press.
