Grave concerns over poor state of roads

MOUTSE – The poor state of some roads in Sekhukhune district remain to be of grave concern for residents in the district as they complain relevant authorities are moving at a snail’s pace to address the situation.

The residents of Moutse outside Groblersdal raised concerns over the dilapidated state of some roads in the area.

They worried the poor state of the roads continued to claim innocent lives at a very consistent rate and no one from Limpopo government seemed to heed the residents call for the matter to be attended urgently.

According to the residents, relevant departments were engaged with regard to the issue of potholes that have left the roads in devastating state.

Seun Mogotji, a community leader, said one would be excused for mistaking the potholes in the area for graves.

“And indeed they have swallowed many people yet Limpopo government seem not to be bothered by the situation,” said Mogotji.

The residents further indicated that the latest victims of those potholes lost their lives over the Easter Weekend on the D856 Philadelphia main road next to St Josephs school when a VW Polo and a Mahindra SUV collided head on.

“How many people must die before the relevant departments actually do what they are paid to do and fix the death traps in Moutse,” asked Mogoji.

Regarding the state of the road where the accident occurred, Joel Seabi, Limpopo Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, said the matter had reached their attention and according to the report they had, the road did not have too many potholes but just a few, about 700 metres, from where the accident occurred.

Seabi said with regard to the accident, they would leave the possible cause of it to the police and the Department of Transport and Community Safety, but the report they had was that where the accident occurred, there were no potholes.
