Five perish following accident on R573 Road

MARBLE-HALL/SIYABUSWA

A total of five people died at the scene during an accident which involved a bakkie and a minibus on the R573 Road on Sunday.

Tidimalo Chuene, Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson, confirmed that 14 passengers who were injured were transported to Philadelphia Hospital in Dennilton.

Chuene indicated that the accident occurred on a piece of road that has been under construction for some time, which posed a danger to motorists, between Marble Hall and Siyabuswa within Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality.

“Reports indicate that the driver of a light delivery van failed to comply with a temporary road traffic sign and collided head-on with a minibus. While awaiting formal investigations, reckless driving cannot be ruled out,” stated Chuene.

Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, has expressed shock at the fatal accident and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families.

“I wish to convey my condolences to the loved ones of those who lost their lives and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said Mathye.

The MEC further urged road users to drive with caution and exercise maximum patience.
