Residents urged to register for illegal electricity connections amnesty

GROBLERSDAL – Following Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality’s raid on illegal electricity connections in various parts of the municipality, with Roossenekal and Masakaneng being the most recently targeted, the institutions has announced an amnesty programme for residents who remain illegally connected.

In statement released earlier this month, the municipality has invited all customers who are unlawfully connected to the municipal electricity network to apply for amnesty in order to receive a 25% discount on the first illegal connection cost.

“Notice is hereby given to Elias Motsoaledi customers who are illegally connected to the electricity network to apply for amnesty to qualify for a 25 percent discount on the first attempt illegal connection fee,” read the statement.

According to the statement, the amnesty period is valid from 1 April to 30 April. “Residents who want to apply for amnesty must visit the main office. To register for amnesty, a customer must submit the meter number, copy of ID, stand number and contact information. It should be noted that customers who were issued with illegal electricity connection fines before the amnesty period will not qualify,” further read the statement.

Elias Motsoaledi Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Infrastructure, Rhodes Msiza, earlier last month, met with the community of Masakaneng to engage them on the pressing issue of illegal electricity connections prevalent in the settlement.

The meeting aimed to create awareness, gather feedback and collaborate on solutions to eradicate the problem.
