Residents demand tarring of D4134/D4140 road
MOROKE
Residents from 11 villages, Sehunyane, Magobading, Phala, Motloulela, Malokela, Kgopaneng, Makubu, Pidima, Maphoko, Makofane and Morulaneng are demanding better roads from the Limpopo government.
On December 12, these villagers protested to the Limpopo public works offices in Moroke. Their demand was the tarring of the D4134/D4140 road. They first gathered at the Magobading T- junction on the R37 before they submitted their memorandum of demands.
According to the protesters, “It has been 18 years of false promises, by the Limpopo government.”
They said they had been promised a tar road since 2006, but there has been no progress.
“This road project is used by politicians to steal government’s money. Politicians also benefit by tendering and patching potholes,” alleged the protesters.
“We want to be told when this road project will start. We expect this project to start during the 2025/26 financial year. No one must tell us there is no money,” said one of the conveners, Delta Madire.
Cedrick Sekgobela, also a convener and member of the D4134/D4140 Road Forum, alleged that the former Limpopo MEC for roads and transport, Justice Pitso, made a commitment to tar the road in 2006.
“Designs for the road and environmental impact assessments were made, both social and technical, and consultants and associates were appointed. The transition that took place between 2008 and 2010 that resulted in the reshuffling of MECs in Limpopo impacted negatively on our road project.”
He added that during their recent engagements with public works and the Road Agency Limpopo (RAL), the latter had completed detailed designs for the project and is waiting for funding for the road.
The D4134/D4140 road links the 11 villages to the R37. The residents reiteraited that tarring the road, will improve the local economy and reduce traffic on the busy R37.
Both the Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) and Limpopo public works were given a minimum of 14 days to respond to the community’s grievances.
