EMLM disconnects illegal electricity in Masakaneng

MASAKANENG – Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality (EMLM) has launched an intensified campaign to remove illegal electricity connections, targeting improved power reliability and better revenue collection across the area.

The latest operation took place on Tuesday 26 May 2026 in Masakaneng Settlement outside Groblersdal, EMLM Ward 14, where municipal teams disconnected unlawful connections and restored compliance with electricity regulations.

Municipality officials said the drive is part of a broader effort to address the municipality’s mounting Eskom debt, much of which stems from residents consuming power without paying.

According to the Senior Manager for Infrastructure Services, illegal connections and meter tampering are pushing electricity demand beyond the municipality’s allocated supply.

“That overload triggers load reductions and financial penalties from Eskom,” he said.

He further stated that overloading caused by illegal connections often led to transformer explosions, leaving communities without electricity and posing serious safety risks that may result in loss of life.

Residents found with illegal electricity connections or bridged meters were disconnected, fined reconnection fees, and charged additional costs for damaged meters and infrastructure.

The municipality urged residents to refrain from illegal electricity activities and to work together in protecting public infrastructure and ensuring sustainable service delivery.

The Municipality further expressed appreciation to the South African Police Service and Municipal Wardens for their support and cooperation during the operation, which contributed to its smooth and successful execution.
