Continued SDM water monitoring drive brings relief to Fetakgomo Tubatse
GA-MAPHOPHA/NGWAABE – The Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) has made significant strides in addressing long-standing water challenges in various wards of Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM)
Through the initiative, SDM Executive Mayor, Cllr Minah Bahula, intensified water monitoring drive which has yielded positive results, with residents of Ga-Maphopha and Ngwaabe areas benefiting from improved water supply.
Residents have welcomed and expressed appreciation for the Executive Mayor’s intervention, particularly the borehole and water infrastructure programme, which seeks to address long-standing water challenges in the area.
Last month in February, the Executive Mayor Bahula , supported by a panel of contractors, launched a focused “war room” intervention aimed at accelerating water provision.
This initiative included the development of four pump houses that will supply surrounding communities such as Mokololwane, Matsošo, and Maphopha Village among others.
The Ga-Maphopha pump house, currently producing 2.2 megalitres of water per day, is a notable success. Additional pump houses are nearing completion and are expected to further stabilize the water supply in the coming weeks.
During the oversight visit conducted on Thursday 19 March 2026, the Executive Mayor emphasized that more work needs to be done to ensure equitable access to water across all communities. “We will continue to expand our interventions to other affected areas, including Ntake and Ga-Maepa,” she said.
In a separate intervention, Acting SDM Executive Mayor, Cllr Kukie Sefala-Makgolane, accompanied by Acting Local Mayor of FTLM Cllr Moeng and several Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs), led the oversight visit to various villages of FTLM recently to assess progress and ensure effective water service delivery.
The District’s Operations and Maintenance Team, supported by a panel of contractors, is working tirelessly to strengthen capacity and fast-track maintenance and service delivery in areas where resources are constrained.
As a temporary measure, a borehole will be drilled in Makopung within the next two weeks to provide relief and improve access to water for affected residents.
The team also met with the Magadimane Ntweng Traditional Council and community members in Ward 15 to listen to their concerns and provide updates on progress.
During the programme, the district municipality has urged the community to play their part in safeguarding infrastructure by reporting acts of vandalism and misuse of state resources.
