20 rape suspects among 382 arrested in Limpopo
LIMPOPO
The high-density Operation Shanela continues to deliver decisive results across Limpopo, with police intensifying co-ordinated crime-combating actions.
Between February 9 and 15, a total of 382 suspects were arrested for various offences. Notably, 20 suspects were arrested for rape, highlighting SAPS’ firm stance against gender-based violence (GBV) and crimes targeting the most vulnerable members of society.
Through investigations, patrols, roadblocks, stop-and-search activities and compliance inspections, police removed illegal firearms and ammunition from circulation, reducing the potential for violent crimes.
The arrests included suspects linked to rape, murder, illegal mining, possession of dangerous weapons, drugs and more. Items confiscated during the operations include firearms, ammunition and narcotics.
The Limpopo commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended members for their efforts, particularly in addressing GBV.
“Operation Shanela demonstrates our unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable groups, especially women and children. The arrest of 20 rape suspects sends a strong message that perpetrators of GBV will be pursued and brought before the courts. We remain resolute in ensuring safer communities across Limpopo.”
All suspects have begun appearing before various magistrates’ courts and investigations are ongoing.
