SDM convenes Lekgotla to enhance service delivery

GROBLERSDAL

On Thursday 13 November 2025, the Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) convened its First Quarter Lekgotla of the current financial year, bringing together political heads and administrative arm to deliberate on mechanisms to enhance service delivery efficiency, economic development, and governance reform.

The meeting, held at the SDM Council Chamber in Groblersdal, served as a platform to evaluate progress, identify persistent challenges, and outline strategic interventions to drive sustainable growth across the district.

Cllr Alfred Matlala, Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Planning and Economic Development, represented the Executive Mayor, Cllr Minah Bahula, who was attending another strategic development meeting, the Provincial Taking Legislature to the People in Schoornoord.

“We need to strive to meet the timelines set by National Treasury. If it is a matter of writing off debts, that must be done. If it is a matter of restructuring the financial misconduct board, that must also be done to achieve our desired objectives,” Cllr Matlala reiterated.

Matlala emphasized the importance of focusing on Infrastructure and Water Services (IWS), stating that it remains fundamental to changing the district’s economic fortunes and impacting the lives of its people.

The Lekgotla resolved to intensify monitoring and provide strategic support to ensure improved outcomes in this critical service delivery area.

SDM Municipal Manager, Meshack Kgwale, commended the collective vision of all municipalities in the district, which he said shows great improvement with demonstrable progress on the ground.

Kgwale also highlighted the gradual improvement in the district’s employment rate and commended the strengthened Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the local municipalities and the district, which has made it easier for communities to access services closer to home.

The Lekgotla reaffirmed Sekhukhune District Municipality’s commitment to good governance, financial accountability, and people-centered service delivery, ensuring that progress made translates into tangible improvements in the lives of the district’s residents.
