Vala Umgodi High Visibility Patrols lead to arrests and seizures in Sekhukhune

SPITSKOP/NOKANENG – The Police in Limpopo has made significant strides in combating illegal mining activities in the province through the Vala Umgodi Task Team, with high-visibility patrols conducted around Sekhukhune in the Spitskop and Nokaneng areas on 10 August 2025, resulting in arrests and seizures.

Lieutenant Colonel Masekela Magoro, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, said during the patrols, the Sekhukhune Vala Umgodi Task Team came across a white tipper truck loading minerals believed to be chrome from another stationary tipper truck in the Spitskop area.

“A 60-year-old male was arrested on the scene and charged with illegal mining of minerals,” he said.

Magoro added that in a separate incident in the Nokaneng area at around 23:40, a side-tip truck loaded with minerals believed to be chrome was observed and upon noticing the police, the driver and passenger fled the scene, abandoning the truck.

“The vehicle was secured and is subject to further investigation. The police continues to prioritize and escalate operations against illegal mining and related criminal activity,” he said.
