Limpopo Legislature commends SDM’s good governance
SEKHUKHUNE
Sekhukhune District Municipality has been commended for its strides in good governance and financial accountability during a joint sitting of the COGHSTA and Treasury department portfolio committees, becoming the first district to present its governance report at this level. The joint sitting was held on 15 August at the Bolivia Lodge in Polokwane .
Chaired by Hon. Thabo Mokone, who is also chair of chairs in the legislature, the session highlighted Sekhukhune’s growing balance between administrative and political stability. Legislators praised the district for key improvements, including reduced reliance on consultants, increased use of internal capacity for financial reporting, VAT recovery, and enhanced debt collection. Hon. Mokone emphatically echoed the members assertion that Sekhukhune “is NOT BAD at all in governance ” but however warned that there should not be complacency. Mokone lauds the district for the fruitful engagements.
The Acting Executive Mayor, Cllr Samson Nkosi and Cllr Rankwe Tabane on behalf of the district Speaker, alongside Acting MM and CFO Hendrick Nkadimeng, and another senior official Director Madumane Danger. led the presentation.
Notably, MPL Hon. Nkakareng Rakgoale lauded the district’s efforts to redirect funds from outsourced consultancy fees to service delivery priorities. “This is commendable . It’s a good approach , as this is a challenge in many municipalities. It will indeed improve services and impact lives”.
While acknowledging progress, MEC for Treasury, Hon. Mahoai Kgabo, encouraged the district to explore shared and centralised audit services with its local municipalities to improve audit outcomes. He noted that Sekhukhune should be proud of the lessons gained through this combined oversight mechanism session.
