Limpopo SAPS thwart illegal mining at Sefateng and Bokone mines

In a decisive move to combat illegal mining, the Vala Umgodi Task Team conducted targeted operations driven by credible intelligence on June 13.
These operations aimed to dismantle illegal mining activities at two prominent sites, Sefateng Chrome Mine and Bokone Platinum Mine. This highlights the police’s unwavering commitment to uphold the rule of law and protect the environment.
At approximately 01:30, the team responded to reports of illegal activities at Sefateng Chrome Mine. Upon arrival, they discovered piles of chromite ore and arrested two suspects, a 38-year-old and a 17-year-old Zimbabwean males, for illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act.
The suspects were detained at Mecklenburg SAPS, along with seized items including a blue jackhammer, a generator, two wheelbarrows, a pickaxe, a shovel, electric cords, a 20-liter petrol container, and a liter of petrol.
“Further intelligence led to the discovery of illegal mining activities at Bokone Platinum Mine at around 03:30 on the same day. Two suspects, both Zimbabweans aged 45 and 39, were arrested on charges of illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act. A generator, two jackhammers, four shovels, electric cords, a white multi-plug, a white Toyota Hilux, and a Tata tipper truck with chromite weighing 21,140 kg were confiscated,” said Limpopo SAPS spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
He said the Limpopo SAPS remains resolute in its efforts to eradicate illegal mining.
“These operations exemplify our ongoing dedication to protecting our resources and ensuring lawful economic activity. The suspects are currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing.
We call on the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to illegal mining. Working together, we can safeguard our environment and promote sustainable development for all.”
