Sekhukhune learners given opportunity to debate community safety
JANE FURSE – Learners’ debating teams from Tshehlwaneng, Bopedi Bapedi, Ngwanamatlang and Ponti secondary schools competed in the Community Safety Debate clash in Jane Furse at the Zai OAT Hotel on 31 May.
The Department of Transport and Community Safety is hosting the debate competitions across the province.
The learners debated on economic desperation driving illegal immigrants to sell expired goods and community policing effectively reducing weapons and drug-related crimes.
According to the department, the initiative forms part of its ongoing campaign to foster civic responsibility and critical thinking among learners.
The department stated that through the debates, participants actively explore and address pressing community safety issues.
“The event has proven successful in promoting awareness and stimulating learner-led dialogue on real-world challenges,” stated the department.
The top-five participants in the session were selected to represent Sekhukhune district at the provincial competition on 16 August.
The debate event further creates a platform for learners to propose youth-driven solutions to challenges while also encouraging them to explore careers in an array of sectors.
The initiative is rolled out in partnership with the Limpopo Department of Education to empower young minds to shape the future of community safety.
The department added that the programme not only fosters critical thinking, public speaking and problem-solving skills bot also nurtures solution-oriented citizens who are passionate about creating a safer and more informed community.
“By engaging youth in discussions on community safety, the department is investing in a safer, more informed future for Limpopo,” shared the department.
