Foreign objects allegedly discovered in pack of snacks in Leeuwfontein
LEEUWFONTEIN – The issue of sale of potentially health hazardous food items at local spaza shops once again reared its ugly head in Leeuwfotein on Monday, 24 March.
This after a minor allegedly purchased a pack of snacks containing suspected foreign objects inside from a foreign national-owned spaza shop at the RDP Section of the area.
Residents mobilised to close down all foreign national-owned shops in the area following the incident.
Assisted by the local neighbourhood watch formation, they checked the statuses of the items at the shops on Tuesday, 25 March.
It is alleged that several items were found to have expired at the implicated spaza shop. Maphefo Makola, a resident, said it was shocking to discover that a lot of items at the shop had long expired and starting to generate worms.
“What we saw at that shop was disheartening. Worms were coming out of numerous items such as bags of mealie meal as the stock was being checked,” lambasted Makola.
Representatives of the foreign national-owned shops met with the local neighbourhood watch leadership to resolve the impasse.
The meeting resulted in the reopening of several other shops but the implicated one remained closed into Wednesday morning.
Makola said they are still waiting for laboratory results to determine what the apparent foreign objects that were discovered from the pack of snacks in question were.
“For now we can safely say the shop remains closed until further notice as we are also still engaged in a meeting over the matter,” indicated Makola on Wednesday morning.
The paper has reliably learnt that the minor was not taken to a health facility for medical check-ups. It remains unclear if the minor had consumed the snacks.
