Edna set sights on Miss Township Limpopo Crown
MAMONE
Edna Mapea, a 19-year-old beauty pageant contestant from Mamone Village outside Jane Furse, is one of young hopefuls’ models currently competing for the 2025 Miss Township Limpopo Beauty Pageant crown.
Edna entered the competition earlier this year and emerged as one of the semi-finalists. The beauty pageant was established a few years ago in Pretoria, Gauteng Province, before it was staged in other provinces for the first time in 2024 including across Limpopo Province.
Edna said she developed the love for modelling when she was 9-years-old where she was accorded the Miss title at her primary school.
Because of lack of support at the time, Edna said when she turned 15, she gave up modelling after losing confidence and self-esteem which were necessary for her to continue pursuing a career in beauty pageant.
“During those years, I started comparing myself with other people on how they are better than me. Fortunately I managed to regain my confidence as time goes by after getting motivations,” she said.
She said the Miss Township Limpopo ignited her modelling passion as it empowers and grooms young aspiring beauty contestants.
“More than anything, it teaches independency to young girls so they could learn not to compare themselves with anyone and understand that they are unique in their own way as they are running their own race in this life. Because of this platform, so far I learnt that I have to look up for myself more than anything and become my own inspiration. Understanding that I am a human, I am meant to make mistakes, notably, I have to grow-up and learn from my mistakes,” Edna said.
Edna said she did not allow her shortcomings to determine her future by allowing herself to make a difference with her life and be the better person she has always wanted to become.
“I realize that where you come from does not determine where you are going. You can make a difference and be the person you are viewing yourself to be in the future regardless of your home situation. Anything is possible as a black child,” she said.
Edna said her long-term goal is to see herself growing in the pageantry industry and being a good example to her peers and other young people in her community.
“Hopefully and surely, one day, I will make it to Miss South Africa and take my village’s name to places. Just as they say that ‘we all start somewhere’, this is the real beginning of my journey. This time I am not willing to give up like before regardless of the challenges I am going to encounter going forward in this industry,” asserted Edna.
She encouraged other young people to go out and work very hard for what they want and believe in achieving their goals.
“Yes, people will always talk in whatever way it comforts them but at the end of the day is all about you as a young person. It is your journey of life and no one has a say about it except you,” Edna advised.
