Top teams battle it out in the ‘Wa Rona Gupta Tournament’
Leeuwfontein – Four popular football teams from different parts of Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality (EPMLM) villages locked horns in the Wa Rona Gupta Football Tournament played at Leeuwfontein Sports Grounds outside Marble Hall.
The tournament was sponsored by Kwena Sports Development with R10 000 cash first prize up for grabs for the winners.
Football teams participated in the tournament were PSG FC Masakaneng, Mighty Blues FC from Moganyaka, Vortex Kings FC from Schoonbie Farms and Ofentse Ice FC from Leeuwfontein.
The first match saw PSG FC eliminating Vortex FC with a 2-0 score and booked a place in the final. In the second game, Mighty Blues FC played a goaless draw in 90 minutes. The match was sent straight to the penalty shootout. Mighty Blues advanced to the final of the tournament after defeating Ofentse 5-4 on penalties.
The final match between Mighty Blues and PSG ended with a 1-1 draw and the organizers ruled that the teams share the first prize money as it was already dark for penalty shootout to take place.
Tournament organizer, Shadrack Maelane, said the Wa Rona Gupta sporting event is rotational and will take place again on 4 August at Mississippi Sports Grounds in Mamphokgo.
“The ultimate goal is to offer equal opportunities to young people across the villages because we believe that the impact of the rotational tournament will transform their lives in order to become professional footballers in the near future,” he said.
Maelane added that Kwena Sports Development will also be hosting the Under 19 Top 8 Football Tournament at Masokolara Sports Grounds in Leeuwfontien.
“The tournament will be organized on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July with under 19 teams from different part of Ephraim Mogale participating,” he said.
Maelane has called on community members to come in numbers to support the Kwena Sports Development sporting events.
Maelane appealed to anyone who might come on board to sponsor the sporting activities to contact Kwena Serage on 072 212 9077 or Shadrack Maelane on 076 251 2978.
