MOGORWANE – Sekhukhune District Municipality Executive Mayor, Minah Bahula introduced the Mandela Month programme through meeting Dikgoshigadi from across the district at Boiketlong Lodge in Mogorwane Village in Tuesday, 2 July.
According to the district municipality, the kick-start of the Mandela Month activities saw Executive Mayor Bahula engage in a dialogue with Dikgoshigadi with the aim to discuss community development and empowerment.
Lemson Moropjane, SDM spokesperson, indicated that Bahula met and interacted with Dikgoshigadi in a significant engagement aimed at understanding and enhancing their roles in community development.
Moropjane said the executive mayor and her collective sought to gain firsthand insight into the vital contributions of traditional leadership in their communities.
“Recognizing the importance of traditional leadership structures, the mayor emphasized the supportive role played by Dikgoshigadi in fostering community development and cohesion. This meet-and-greet session provided an invaluable platform for an open dialogue, where they shared their experiences, concerns, and suggestions for improvement,” further said Moropjane.
Speaking to Dikgoshigadi, Bahula said, “During this Mandela Month of July, the district government would also like to thank you for your role in leading communities to actively participate in the 2024 national and provincial elections. Your leadership was instrumental in encouraging community members to cast their votes and engage in the democratic process.”
She further emphasized the need to empower Dikgoshigadi and ensure they have equal access to resources and opportunities.
“This empowerment is crucial for enhancing your effectiveness in driving community development and addressing local issues. We will therefore in future, extend an invitation to the newly elected provincial government, led by Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, to collaborate closely with traditional leadership,” committed Bahula.
She expressed her gratitude to President Cyril Ramaphosa for appointing and announcing cabinet ministers, particularly those from Limpopo and Sekhukhune, pointing out in particular the appointment of Dr. Namane Masemola as the Deputy Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Coghta) as well as that of former Premier Stan Mathabatha as Deputy Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform.
Bahula says their representation in the national government is seen as a significant step towards addressing the unique needs and aspirations of the district.
