Marula Community Chrome supports local livestock farmers
Livestock farming plays a crucial role in local economies, especially in rural areas. Unfortunately, the agricultural sector across the country faces many challenges such as extreme weather conditions, disease, theft, high costs and availability of feed.
Seasonal feed availability is particularly challenging when there is little rain and intense heat, which is often the experience in the hot summer months in the Limpopo province.
Marula Community Chrome (MCC), the community-owned company that is a 50% shareholder in Makgomo Chrome, demonstrated its support for cattle farmers in the six local communities by procuring and distributing products vital to the health of their livestock during December 2023 and January 2024.
MCC identified the agricultural support programme in consultation with the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality, and the local Magoshi as part of the company’s commitment to drive local economic development and self-reliance across the Four Farms area.
The procurement and distribution of almost R1,8 million’s worth of cattle feed, dip and nutrients is intended to support the famers and sustain their source of income through the difficult times.
“MCC’s sole purpose is driving shared value for local communities, and we do this through various community upliftment projects,” said MCC Chairman, Dr Kinesh Pather. “This project is just one of many which demonstrates our ongoing commitment to this objective.”
“Cattle farming is very important because it is a source of food for families and communities, but it also is the livelihood for so many of the families living on the Four Farms. It goes without saying that we would welcome an opportunity to work with the provincial and municipal government departments to support such a worthy cause.”
“We are happy about the support from MCC for small cattle farmers in our area,” said Elmon Makofane from Kgoshigadi MW Mohlala.
