Lack of fire engines put residents’ lives at risk
Marble Hall – The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality (EPMLM) said they will write to the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs CoGHSTA, Basikopo Makamu, seeking answers on the dysfunctional fire station of Marble Hall Town, which they say it has deliberately put lives of residents at risk.
According to the party, the only fire station in Marble Hall was moved to Groblersdal which is about 30kms away and could not attend to fire incidents emergencies on time.
Lindy Wilson, DA Constituency Head in Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality (EPMLM), said the party was saddened by fire incidents that occurred a couple of months ago where three homes were burnt down because all the fire trucks and emergency services for the town were moved to Groblersdal in Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality (EMLM).
“The move has left the entire community vulnerable and at risk. In the latest incident happened on 6 March 2024, a home in Protea Street burnt to the ground because there were no fire trucks or emergency services to assist in the crisis. The fire truck from EMLM took over 30 minutes to arrive, with no water on board and not one of the fire extinguishers was in a working condition. The crew stood idly by while the house burnt down,” explained Wilson.
Furthermore, Wilson said the Ephraim Mogale Clinic is now also without an emergency fleet after their ambulance was moved to the Tooitskraal Clinic, leaving the town without emergency medical services.
“In a recent response to written questions, the National Minister of CoGTA advised that Limpopo was one of the provinces that did not meet the Fire Assessments standards. MEC Makamu must also explain who will be responsible for the losses experienced by the residents as a result of the unavailability of emergency services,” she said.
Wilson has lambasted the ANC-led municipalities, saying they have collapsed at every level and they are appalled by the failure of the Ephraim Mogale and Sekhukhune District Municipalities to provide a safe and secure environment for residents.
Lemson Moropjane, SDM Spokesperson, said they are still investigating the issues and could not comment on the matter yet.
