Baroka relegated to the NFD
LEBOWAKGOMO
Marumo Gallants will be the only team from Limpopo participating in the South African Premier Soccer League next season.
On Saturday, soccer lovers from Limpopo were dealt a major blow when Baroka FC got relegated to the GladAfrica NFD.
Bakgaga were relegated from the DStv Premiership after their 1-0 defeat to Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.
Baroka needed a victory at all costs to stand any chance of avoiding the axe; Bakgakga didn’t do enough to win the clash as they conceded in the 55th minute.
The solitary goal by experienced defender Clayton Daniels was enough to end Baroka’s six-year stay in the top-tier.
The relegation of Baroka is a big setback for the club as they had started to attract sponsors which are key for any side to be successful in the top-tier.
The team had also invested in a state of the art sports facility in Lebowakgomo.
Baroka chairman Khurushi Mphahlele was disappointed to see his team axed from the PSL.
Mphahlele accepted personal responsibility for the club’s downfall.
“To be honest I am very disappointed. I don’t have words to express how disappointed I am,” he said.
“I am also to be blamed because if somebody didn’t do their job, I am the one who was supposed to make sure that people do their jobs in my oversight role and take action if things were not going right.
“We will work hard to ensure this team bounce back from the PSL,” he said.
Sekhukhune United which is owned by Malatji brothers from Burgersfort finished the season on 11th position. Babina Noko plays the home games in Gauteng as there is no proper stadium of PSL standards in Sekhukhune.
