Premier denounces allegations of inaction on VBS saga
Lebowakgomo – Limpopo Premier, Chupu Mathabatha, has reiterated that he has taken decisive steps to implement the remedial actions on the VBS matter.
Speaking during the Office of the Premier’s Budget Vote in the Lebowakgomo Legislature on Tuesday, the premier said that the reports that he has not taken action on the matter are false.
Premier Mathabatha informed that immediately after Adv. Terry Motau’s report on VBS was made public in 2018, he directed the provincial Treasury to commission a Forensic Audit into the matter and that as a result of such audit, majority of Municipal Managers (MM)s and Chief Financial Officers (CFO)s who were implicated were disciplined or fired for their role in the VBS matter.
“In addition, seven (7) Mayors were since relieved from their duties. If these actions do not amount to concrete expression of our resolve to fight against corruption, then I need to be advised further,” said Premier Mathabatha.
Mathabatha further said: “We referred our forensic report to the HAWKS, who continue to effect arrests for prosecution. Therefore, for any person to say that it has been years of inaction, that to me is a game of political point scoring laced with half-truths and lies.”
Although the Public Protector’s report did not pronounce any finding or remedial action to be implemented by the Premier, Premier Mathabatha said that he shall continue to work hand in hand with the various municipal councils to make sure that they provided the required feedback.
He said that there was no doubt that the provincial government has done what was humanly possible to deal decisively with the VBS saga.
