Rape convict gets life sentence
MOROKE – A 30 year-old man was sentenced to life and an additional 20 years imprisonment on Monday 31 January 2022 by the Limpopo division of the High Court for three separate incidents of rape that occurred in the Moroke Village outside Burgersfort between 2017 and 2018.
In the first incident on Saturday 02 September 2017 at about 20:00, a 23 year-old woman and the accused, Chrishani Masete, were on their way to catch a taxi when the accused suddenly started to assault and forced her to the nearby village where he then raped her.
In another unrelated incident which occurred on 30 December 2017, a 16 year-old girl was walking home with her friends when she met the accused who then forced her to the nearby bushes and raped her.
In the last incident which occurred 02 December 2018 at about 17:30. A 15 year-old girl was in the field when the accused dragged her to his home and raped her.
All the cases were assigned to Detective Sergeant Mamodishi Letlapa of the Burgersfort Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit. Consequent to a thorough and diligent investigation, Masete was arrested and linked to all three incidents.
Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, said the accused was ultimately found guilty and sentenced to life for rape of the 15 year-old girl and 10 years imprisonment each for the other two cases. He was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has hailed the investigating officer for the exceptional work and reiterated that police would ensure that perpetrators of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and femicides were brought to book and justice was served for the victims.
