Over 145 candidates from 29 political parties are set to contest the by-elections in 40 wards on May 19th.

The by-elections will be held across seven provinces including Limpopo and a total of 362 965 voters are registered to participate in these by-elections.

The by-elections will take place under strict new cocid-19 protocols aimed at ensuring the safety of voters, election staff, party agents, observers and other stakeholders.

In Limpopo, Sekhukhune region 4 parties would contest within Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipalities (FTLM) in ward 13.

Contesting parties are African National Congress (ANC), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Socialist Agenda of Dispossessed and Azania People’s Organisation (AZAPO).

Contesting candidate in the FTLM for AZAPO is Mokaba Komane, Socialist Agenda of Dispossessed is Oupa Nkambule, ANC is PutiPuti Mokgakala and for the EFF is Matjipa Mphogo.

Due to budget cuts the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is compelled to hold one vote registration weekend instead of two ahead of the municipal elections for the upcoming local government elections on October 27.

“We all know that because of covid-19 departments have their budgets reduced. This is the case at the IEC too,” explained chief electoral commissioner Sy Mamabolo.

Mamabolo said voters would be asked to bring along their own pens when casting ballots.

“We will have pens, however we are encouraging people to bring their pens so there is no exchange of pens. Hopefully by so doing we will prevent possibilities of the transmission of the virus between people,” he said
