MOKUTUNG

The Police in Ohrigstad have activated a massive manhunt for suspects, who allegedly attacked and murdered a prominent business woman and her family member at a hotel in Mokutung just outside Ohrigstad on Saturday 3 June 2023 at around 13:30.

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, said the police were alerted of an incident which suggested that there was trouble in the business premises.

“On their arrival at the scene, the police found two burnt bodies of white male and female inside two different buildings,” he said.

The deceased were identified as 73-year-old Anneke Claassen, who is the owner of the business and her nephew Hennie Claassen (73).

Ledwaba added that according to police preliminary investigations, it is alleged that an African male wearing balaclavas was seen fleeing the scene.

“The motive for the killing is unknown, no arrest have been made,” said Ledwaba.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, condemned the brutal yet senseless attack and the subsequent killing, calling upon anyone with information to contact the police.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is requested to call Detective Lieutenant Colonel Richard Boshomane on 079 894 5501, Warrant Officer Phaladi Makola on 082 749 2233, the Crime Stop Number on 08600 10111, the nearest police or make use of my SAPSApp.

The Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM), Cllr Maleke Mokganyetji, was shocked with the incident and condemned the brutal murder with strongest possible terms.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families, friends and community of Ohrigstad during these difficult times. We also call upon our law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and arrest the perpetrators to this horrific incident,” she said.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo calls for urgent action, urging the police to strengthen their presence and resources in the Ohrigstad area.

Desiree van der Walt, DA Caucus Leader in Limpopo Legislature, said the incident has not only robbed the victims of their lives but has also left a community traumatised and in fear.

“No one should have to face such brutality, and it is our collective responsibility as a society to ensure that justice is served. We call on the police to investigate this case swiftly and decisively. We commend the efforts of the police in launching a manhunt for the suspects and urge them to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice. The perpetrators must be apprehended and brought to book without delay,” she said.

Van der Walt said the party will further call the Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, to ensure that the investigation into this double murder receives the necessary attention and resources it deserves.

“Additionally, we urge the Minister to implement a comprehensive plan to address the rising levels of violent crime across the country. It is vital that law enforcement agencies have the tools, training, and support they need to effectively combat crime and protect our citizens,” she said.

Van der Walt said the party will continue to monitor the case closely and offer their support to the affected community.
