DA demand adequate visible speed limit signs on D3062
LEBOWAKGOMO
The growing number of deaths on the D3062 road, following the death of Thapelo Sylvester Mmapo, is cause for grave concern.
The DA in Lepelle Nkumpi said it will request the acting manager for community services, Masopo Mametja, to increase the presence of local traffic police on the D3062 road, that stretches for 20.7 kilometres through Mamogashwa, Sekgopokgopong, Gedroogte and Ga-Molapo villages.
Mmapo, a pedestrian, was hit by a speeding vehicle in Ga-Molapo on 10 April 2023 and later succumbed to his injuries in the Zebediela hospital.
“Oversight to the D3062 on April 18 revealed, that this stretch of road cuts through 4 villages, but there are no speed bumps or adequate visible speed limit signs. There are further no yield signs at the T-junction entering the D3062,” said DA’s councillor Helga Hlongoane.
He said the lack of traffic calming devices on the D3062 to slow down vehicles has given speedsters free rein.
“We urge Mametja to increase the presence of traffic police on the D3062 and to show no mercy to speedster who threatens the lives of other motorists and pedestrians.
We will also engage with Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) to increase speed limits signs and to construct speed bumps to slow down vehicles in order to improve safety conditions and to save lives.”
