Pupils compete for top honours in spelling bee competition
PRAKTISEER
To instil the love for reading and writing, the Read to Know literacy foundation organised a spelling bee competition at Bogwasha Primary School in Praktiseer last Friday.
To win the spelling bee competition for her school, 11-year-old Faith Libambo of Bogwasha Primary School correctly spelled the word “amphitheatre”.
A total of 40 learners from Bogwasha and Itirele primary schools participated.
The spelling bee competition involved pupils from grade fives to grade Sevens.
Libambo won the competition in the sixth round, after cruising from the start. The runner-up spot was clinched by Mogau Mafahla, while Bonolo Nkwana came third. The trio are all from Bogwasha.
Speaking after the competition, the Read to Know literacy foundation’s Botheo Sathekge said they wanted to have such competitions in most local schools.
“This is our second event, and we are planning for more. All we need is support from the business sector and to get a few sponsors on board, which will ensure we have some good prizes for the winners and participants.
“We aim to instil the love of reading in our kids and to have them ready to represent Limpopo in the national spelling bee competitions. We were happy with the support from the two schools and how the children had fared. Each one the participants is a winner today.”
Sathekge thanked the Tubatse SAPS and Moja Chicken for supporting the event.
The top six best pupils were handed trophies and medals. The other participants were given certificates.
