Sekhukhune born striker assist Banyana to win silverware
MOUTSE
Banyana Banyana has made South Africans proud by winning their first ever Awfcon silverware.
Amongst those who ensured the trophy comes to the Cosafa region is Sekhukhune born midfielder cum striker Hildah Tholakele Magaia. The 28 year old star was born at Mpheleng Village in Sekhukhune.
Magaia scored a brace when Banyana triumphed against Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses on Saturday at Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium.
Magaia who plays for Sejong Sportstoto, women’s football club in South Korea said it was difficult when she was side-lined during the tournament with injury.
“It was extremely emotional because when one goes to a tournament you go with the aim of playing. As much as injuries are part and parcel of the game, you just don’t get used to them.
“I believe that God was keeping me so that in the end I got to score the two winning goals. It was super emotional for me, I couldn’t believe it,” she said as they arrived at OR Tambo on Tuesday.
Magaia netted in the 63rd minute after an excellent pass from striker Jermaine Seoposenwe. She then again capitalised from a defensive blunder in the 71st minute to complete her brace.
Banyana won the match 2-1.
Sekhukhune District Municipality’s executive mayor Julia Mathebe congratulated the women’s national team and Magaia.
“We are overjoyed that one of our own from Mpheleng Village (Moutse) has reached great heights and put us on the map. We hope her success inspires many young ladies in our district to follow their dreams and know that through hard work and dedication it is possible to achieve anything,” said Mathebe.
