Team aims to empower communities through golf

EPHRAIM MOGALE – Twenty-three members of the Sekhukhune Golf Development initiative are becoming a force to be reckoned with in the district.

The club, Desmond Cady Wise Club comprising 18 male and five female players, saw its establishment on 16 April this year.

It was formed after the golf sport lovers met a team from Pretoria Golf Club which recognized their talent for the sport.

The group said they were encouraged to form their club and they did not waste time in implementing the project and creating an awareness campaign on the sport with the help of the Pretoria Golf Club players.

The group, without professional training and only with love and self teaching of the sport through experiences gathered as cadies, said that their main with coming up with the project was to introduce and grow the sport in rural communities.

They said they would appreciate any form of help to help build the team to greater heights and grow the sport in rural communities.

“We have started the Sekhukhune Golf Tour whereby we play four games, two in Sekhukhune and two in Pretoria to determine the winner with the aim of establishing a league in the next year. Golf is not popular among black communities. We not are getting any financial support from cooperatives and government and lack training facilities. We have however managed to create awareness on the sport in rural communities,” said the team.

The team added that they aimed to have a competitive league in the sport and empower youth and women, economically, through the sport.
