Rural school gets multipurpose sports facility

MMALEGASANE– Nkgonyeletse Senior Secondary School in Mmalegasane Village outside Jane Furse received a multipurpose sports facility worth R2 million provided by in partnership with Sports Trust on Friday 3 September 2021.

The school became the ninth to receive the facility as part of Nedbank’s HashtagPlay YourPart campaign and the bank gave Marumo Gallants FC, the 2021 Nedbank Cup winners, the opportunity to contribute towards football development through selecting a school in their region where the sports facility would be built.

Minister Sports, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga with the bank, Marumo Gallants FC, The Sports Trust together with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) conducted the handover of the multipurpose sports facility.

Khensani Nobanda, Nedbank’s Group Executive for Marketing and Communications, said they were exceptionally delighted to hand yet another multipurpose sports facility and that time in Limpopo.

Nobanda said sports development formed an important part of the sponsorship philosophy and through their partnership with Sports Trust over the years, they have and continued to create opportunities that not only benefited schools but the communities in which the schools existed.

“Our sponsorship of the Nedbank Cup has also provided us the opportunity to work together with local teams and create a truly tangible impact in South African football,” said Nobanda.

Minister Mthethwa took the opportunity applaud both Nedbank and Marumo Gallants FC for ensuring that the youth of Mmalegasane have access to such a world class facility.

Mthethwa said that would in the main, assist government in reducing the current sports facility backlog inherited from the apartheid legacy.

“For us to be able to create positive citizenry, we need to ensure that our youth have access so that in the long run they can also be competitive,” said Mthethwa.

Minister Motshekga said the donation came at the perfect time after the lifting of suspension of school sports as she announced last month.

Anita Mathews, Executive Director of Sports Trust, said that the multipurpose sports centre was a suitable vehicle to enhance education through sport for the youth in South Africa.

Nkgonyeletse Senior Secondary School was established in 1976 and currently has 313 learners who participate in sports like soccer, volleyball and tennis.
