Dangerous criminal arrested during SAPS operation

The Limpopo SAPS have arrested an alleged rapist and robber. The SAPS conducted an operation termed Thatha Zonke on Wednesday at Ga Podile village. The operation involved members from Burgersfort FCS (Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences) and Driekop VISPOL.
“The operation commenced from 05:00, the focus was on the arrest of a suspect identified as a habitual rapist and robber who lured his female victims by promising them a non- existing job. He invited them to a secluded place where he would eventually rob and rape them,” alleged Limpopo SAPS’ in a statement.

The operation successfully culminated with the recovery of eight cellphones and a pair of Puma running shoes.
The SAPS revealed that the preliminary investigations confirmed the items to have been robbed from different victims by the suspect. The alleged suspect Mathata Gift Phelane was arrested. According to the SAPS, he is also linked to three cases of rape and two robberies committed in the Driekop area.
On Friday, the suspect briefly appeared before the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court; he was denied bail and was remanded in custody. His case was postponed to August 24. Police investigations continue in this matter.
