Illegal mining activities targeted, undocumented foreigners deported
LIMPOPO – A total of 230 suspects were nabbed during May alone in connection with illegal mining related incidents across the five districts of Limpopo.
Thirty of the suspects were directly linked to illegal mining operations, with 51 South Africans and 179 illegal immigrants.
Two-hundred and five of the illegal immigrants were deported to the countries of their origin on the spot.
Lieutenant Colonel Masekela Magoro, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, said the breakthrough was a result of Vala Umgodi task team’s strategic multidisciplinary efforts.
Magoro indicated that the operation also achieved confiscation of a wide array of illicit items, including a handgun and 59 rounds of ammunition as well as four sedans, 16 trucks, two trailers and four backhoe loaders.
“The team also seized four penduka stands, six jackhammers, 16 wheelbarrows, 167 steel balls, 135 spades and over 5400 tons of chrome – a substantial blow to illegal resource extraction. Additionally, 33 cellphones, various tools and copper rolls were confiscated, highlighting the scale of illegal activities targeted,” explained Magoro.
He pointed out that the success underscores the unwavering commitment by Limpopo’s law enforcement agencies to protect natural resources, uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety of communities.
“It demonstrates that strategic and collaborative efforts can deliver tangible results in combating illegal activities that threaten the integrity and economic stability of the province,” stressed Magoro.
The Provincial Commissioner of South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended all the partners and community members for their vigilance and support in the ongoing fight for a safer and lawful Limpopo province.
