SEDFA pledges support for local emerging entrepreneurs
MARBLE HALL
The Small Enterprise Development Fund Agency (SEDFA), an agency of the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD), is intensifying efforts to support small enterprises and cooperatives in South Africa.
Speaking at the Fund Streaming Capacitation Workshop held recently in Marble Hall, Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality (EPMLM), Migael Sithole from SEDFA, underscored the agency’s commitment to fueling entrepreneurship through financial and non-financial support mechanisms.
With a nationwide presence through 54 branches and over 100 incubation centers, SEDFA is strategically positioned to provide essential services such as business information, training, incubation, access to markets, technology assistance, and marketing support.
In Limpopo alone, five branches cater to small businesses, ensuring that the province’s entrepreneurs are not left behind.
SEDFA’s programs prioritize Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) and cooperatives in townships and rural areas, particularly those owned by women, youth and persons living with disabilities.
Through a well-structured client journey approach, SEDFA conducts in-depth assessments of business ideas and enterprises before implementing tailored interventions. This hands-on methodology ensures that businesses receive sustained support, rather than one-time interventions, enabling them to refine product quality, improve production processes and enhance competitiveness.
However, the agency acknowledges the challenge of limited capacity. With its hands-on approach, SEDFA can only engage a select number of enterprises at a time.
To maximize its impact, the agency collaborates with stakeholders across government and the private sector, reinforcing a collective effort to bolster South Africa’s business development ecosystem.
Under the government’s District Development Model (DDM), SEDFA has embraced the District Ecosystem Facilitator model. This initiative positions the agency as a key coordinator of business development support services across both public and private sectors.
By addressing gaps in coordination, SEDFA aims to amplify the impact of enterprise development initiatives, fostering a more robust and interconnected entrepreneurial landscape. Celebrating success stories despite challenges, SEDFA’s initiatives continue to yield remarkable success stories.
During the capacitation workshop, Sithole highlighted the inspiring journey of Ms. Jonko Mohlahlo, the founder of Didipopa Ice Cream, who leveraged startup support from the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA) to transform her business vision into reality.
Such success stories exemplify the transformative power of structured support for small enterprises, reinforcing the importance of SEDFA’s mission.
As SEDFA gears up to expand its funding initiatives, small enterprises and cooperatives across South Africa stand to benefit from a more inclusive, well-coordinated and impactful support system.
With a clear commitment to fostering entrepreneurship, SEDFA is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of small business development in the country.
