Lobamba School Hockey team makes history with debut win

HOEPAKRANS – In a story that could inspire a generation, the Lobamba Combined School Hockey Club, located at Hoepakrans Village in Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality (MLM), delivered a jaw-dropping performance during the TUPS Ward-To-Ward Activation, clinching a decisive 2-0 victory over the more advanced Marulaneng Hockey team.

The win not only electrified the home crowd but also underscored the rapid growth of hockey talent in unexpected places.

Lobamba Combined School’s journey to the top was nothing short of miraculous. Introduced to hockey late in the activation build-up trail, the team had limited time to grasp the fundamentals, let alone prepare for a competitive match.

Yet, in just weeks, the Lobamba squad transformed from rookies to a cohesive, skilled unit, proving that passion and hard work can bridge even the widest gaps in experience.

A game to remember from the first blow of the whistle, Lobamba came out swinging, with their energy and discipline immediately put Marulaneng on the back foot. The first goal came early, a beautifully executed shot off a fast break, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Marulaneng, known for their tactical discipline and years of experience, struggled to regain control against Lobamba’s relentless pace and sharp passing. A second goal late in the game sealed Lobamba’s win, as their defense held firm, denying Marulaneng any chance to claw back into the match.

“This was a dream come true. We never thought we could beat a team as established as Marulaneng, but we believed in ourselves and played as a family,” said Lobamba team captain.

A Jubilant Lobamba supporter, added: “This wasn’t just a game; it was a statement. Our children showed that even late starters can shine if given the opportunity.”

TUPS sporting code President, Puleng Mmotla, said the fruits of the activation and the victory is a testament to the success of the TUPS Ward-To-Ward Activation programme, which introduced hockey and other sports to underrepresented communities across Makhuduthamaga Municipality.

“Lobamba’s rise highlights the untapped potential in these areas, where young athletes are eager to embrace new opportunities. Lobamba’s performance is exactly why we started this programme. They are proof that talent exists everywhere, it just needs to be nurtured,” he said.

The win has ignited a spark in Lobamba and beyond, with parents, students, and community leaders are rallying to ensure the school receives the support needed to sustain and grow its hockey programme.

Lobamba Hockey coach said plans for more intensive training sessions and the development of hockey infrastructure are already in discussion.

“This is just the beginning, our players have shown what they’re capable of, and now it’s time to build on that momentum. A Win beyond the score-line while the 2-0 victory over Marulaneng will be remembered as a historic moment, the true impact of Lobamba’s success lies in its ability to inspire other communities. The match proved that even latecomers can achieve greatness, and it showcased the power of sports to uplift and unite,” said the coach.

As the players celebrated with their fans, one thing was clear; Lobamba Combined School Hockey Club had not just won a game, they had won the hearts of an entire community.
