Located along the R26 at Ohrigstad in the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality, Echo Caves are a fascinating natural attraction boast impressive stalactites, stalagmites and natural rock formations, along with the chambers that hold historical and archaeological significance.
Echo Caves are estimated to be around 240 million years old, dating back to the Permian period. The caves were formed through erosion of limestone rocks by water, creating a vast network of passageways and chambers.
Among key features, the tourism destination has an extensive cave system of over 2km of mapped passageways, unique formations that include stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone and helictites.
Ancient history evidence of human habitation in the area is dating back 10 000 years, while geological significance limestone rocks date back 240 million years ago.
Echo Caves is home to several species, including the rare African false vampire bat, unique microorganisms found in the cave’s isolated environments. Rare species of beetles, spiders, and crickets are also found in the area.
When exploring the place, visitors are catered in a two-hour Standard Tour that navigate the main cave system.
The tourism destination also offers a four-hour Adventure Tour that includes crawling, climbing and exploring narrower passages.
It also has Spelunking Tour, which is a full day exploration catered for experienced cavers, who explore deeper more challenging areas.
